The Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Michigan State University is one of the leading veterinary medical teaching hospitals and referral centers in the world. The VMC, located on the MSU campus, is an accredited veterinary hospital with 18 specialty clinical services, 40 clinical faculty, 28 residents, 14, interns and 170 staff (91 veterinary nurses, 17 veterinary assistants, 62 support staff), an annual caseload of close to 30,000 patients, and a budget of $24 million. Through cutting edge clinical expertise in a broad array of specialty disciplines across species, the VMC provides the foundation for clinical teaching in professional veterinary medical (DVM), veterinary nursing (VN), internship, and residency programs. In addition, the VMC provides critical financial support for academic programs through consistently positive operating margins. We are seeking a dynamic, innovative, service-oriented, highly effective communicator to continue this strong tradition and lead us into the future as Hospital Director.

Responsibilities

The Hospital Director reports directly to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, is a member of the senior leadership team of the College, and ensures that VMC meets its mission providing state of the art clinical care and serving as the primary clinical teaching experience for DVM and VN students and postgraduate veterinarians in advanced clinical training programs. As the Chief Operating Officer, the Hospital Director is responsible for the overall operation of the VMC.

The Director:

• Provides appropriate staffing, facilities, supplies, and equipment to facilitate the clinical services necessary for the academic departments to achieve their teaching, research, and service missions.
• Works closely with the academic department chairs and unit directors, CVM administrative staff, CVM development officers, faculty and staff committees, and veterinary advisory groups to create an environment supportive of high quality professional services provided by the VMC.
• Ensures effective communication with referring veterinarians, animal owners, other customers, staff, students, faculty, other units on campus, and the community.
• Confirms VMC compliance with all applicable University, AVMA, and AAHA policies, as well as appropriate University, state, and federal regulations.
• Manages all legal matters involving the VMC and coordinates these activities with the Dean and the MSU Office of the General Counsel.
• Prepares the VMC budget, monitors VMC fiscal performance, and approves the purchase of new and replacement equipment.
• Has responsibility for financial control of all VMC operations including revenue generation, expenditures, budget planning, monitoring accounting functions, internal audit controls, accounts receivable, and collections.
• Supervises the VMC business office and medical records service, which assist the Director in VMC management.
